Winter can be a magical time for creative projects, especially when they involve spending time with loved ones and connecting with nature. My boyfriend’s niece and nephew recently helped me with this simple and fun winter craft idea, and it was a hit! Together, we made delicious treats for the birds and squirrels to enjoy, perfect for this snowy day!
What You’ll Need:
- 1 apple
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 1-2 tbsp coconut oil
- A mix of seeds and nuts (whatever you have on hand!)
- Examples: peanuts (crushed), hemp seeds, flax seeds, unsweetened banana chips (broken into small pieces)
- Two bowls
- A clean plate
Let’s Get Started!
Step 1: Prepare the Apple
Take one apple and cut it into halves. Then cut each half into four slices. Don’t worry about removing the core or seeds—the animals don’t mind!
Step 2: Make the Peanut Butter Coating
Melt 1/4 cup peanut butter with 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil. If you’re using natural peanut butter with well-mixed oil, you’ll likely only need 1/2-1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Stir the mixture until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Create Your Seed and Nut Mix
Pour your chosen nuts and seeds into a bowl. We used crushed peanuts, hemp seeds, flax seeds, and broken banana chips. Feel free to get creative with whatever you have in your pantry.
Step 4: Assemble the Treats
- Dip an apple slice into the peanut butter mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated on all sides.
- Roll the coated apple slice in the nut and seed mix until it’s well covered.
- Place the finished slice on a clean plate.
- Repeat these steps until all your apple slices are beautifully coated.
If you have leftover peanut butter and nut/seed mix, consider coating some banana chip pieces as well. The more treats, the better!
The Final Step: Share the Love
Once your apple slices and other treats are ready, place them outside for your woodland visitors. Choose spots where you’ve seen birds and squirrels before—on a tree branch, a fence, or even a flat surface like a stump. Then, watch as nature’s guests come to enjoy their winter feast!
Why This Craft is Perfect for Winter
This project is not only fun and easy but also teaches kids about kindness and the importance of caring for animals during colder months. My boyfriend’s niece and nephew loved getting hands-on with the preparation, and their excitement made the experience even more special.
Give this craft a try and share your experience! I’d love to hear how it goes and what creative ingredient combinations you come up with. Happy crafting!
